Step 1: Set up the rummy table
To set up the rummy table, you only need a standard deck of playing cards. As per the rummy rules, the cards rank from ‘2’, which is the lowest, and ace ‘A,’ the highest. This game is played to a fixed number of deals or a particular score. Before you start the game, a dealer should be selected. How to choose the dealer?
Each player draws one card from the shuffled deck. The player who has the lowest card becomes the dealer.
Step 2: Distribute the cards
Every player gets one card (face down) at a time from the dealer. The dealer distributing the cards begins with the player on the left. Each player gets thirteen cards when two players are playing rummy. They can also choose to play with ten cards in case they want to abbreviate the duration of the game. Some of the variations are:
- If the number of players is three to four, each player gets seven cards to play.
- If the number of players is five to six, each player gets six cards to play.
Step 3: Start the Game
After distributing all the cards, the dealer must place the remaining cards on the table in a face-down position, forming a Stack. Now, the dealer discards and flips over the first card of the stack face-up on the table. It is known as a Discard Pile, where the cards are visible to all the players.
The player sitting to the dealer’s left goes first and can either pick up the card from the stack or the discard pile.
Step 4: Pick a set of cards
Every player’s turn begins by picking up one card from either the stack or the discard pile. The players then add that card to their hands. If the stack runs out of cards while playing the game, you must shuffle the discard pile to make a new stack of cards.
Remember! The last card of the new stack is the first one in the discarded pile. Learn more about the rules to play rummy here.
Step 5: Meld or Lay Off
Once you have the cards handy, you can choose from two optional moves:
- Melding
- Laying off
What is melding?
If you have 3 cards of the same suit in a run or a sequence (for example, 5, 6, and 7 of the aces or heart) or three cards of the same kind (three kings or three 2s), you need to build meld by placing them face-up in front of your opponents. This process is called melding. Making a meld is optional. And, you can do it once a round or turn.
What is laying off?
Apart from melding, you can also try laying off. How can you lay off? You can do it by including one or more playing cards from your set (that you are holding in your hand) to any meld already present on the table. Just like melding, laying off is also optional. But, unlike the former, there is no limitation on the number of cards to lay off with the latter.
Step 6: Dump one of your cards
After finishing melding and laying off, you get to end your turn. As per the classic gameplay on how to play rummy is concerned, you must dump one of the cards on the discard pile in a face-up direction.
Did you draw from the discard pile? If so, you may not discard the same card you fetched on that turn. If you take a card from the stock, it can be discarded the same way you want.
Now comes the next player’s turn, sitting next to you. By the way, do not forget the clockwise thing as this game moves like that, and that’s how to play rummy.
Step 7: Win The Game!
When one of the players is left with no cards in their hand, the other players need to stop there. And the former (with no cards) gets points for the rest cards with other players. Let us also understand the scoring system, i.e., the number cards are worth their face value, aces are worth 1 point, and for face cards, you are given 10 points. As soon as the player reaches the game objective, they win.
Let’s do some maths!
The point calculation is as under:
- The face cards (queens, kings, and jacks) equal ten points each.
- The aces mean one point each.
- The numbered cards equal their numbers.
When does a player go rummy?
A player is called rummy when they have done away with all their cards in one round (one go) without melding or laying off. In such cases, they get double points.
It completes one round or hand of the game, and the dealer’s role passes clockwise from one player to another. The cycle continues until you finish the number of hands you have decided before the game starts, or a player gains the pre-decided point total. The player with the maximum points wins!

- Do you keep waiting for a specific card when melding a run? It is not recommended at all. Instead, you should re-evaluate your cards repeatedly to make the necessary changes.
- While arranging your cards, keep things easy to play. One of the best ways to do it—use alternate colors. It will make it easy to pick or discard a card when playing.
- It is not wise to keep your cards in hand for too long. Instead, you should discard the unused card. It stands true, especially for cards with a high point value.
