Punjab Kings IPL journey
Punjab Kings has been through many ups and downs in the last 15 years. Despite all the ups and downs, PBKS (Full Form: Punjab Kings) has always been a strong team, thanks to the support of its fans. Here’s a breakdown of their journey in IPL from 2008-2022.
Putting their best foot forward
The Kings started their 2008 campaign with a bang, qualifying for the semifinal. Yuvraj Singh, a left-handed batsman, was made captain, and Australia’s all-rounder Tom Moody was appointed coach. Shaun Marsh, another Australian, came to international attention with a great season, emerging as the highest run-scorer in the first edition with 616 runs. He led King XI Punjab to the knockout stage, but they lost to Chennai Super Kings in the semifinal by nine wickets. Ultimately, they finished second on the points table, winning 11 of their 14 league games.
A Surprising Outcome in the 2nd IPL Season
Punjab Kings were one of the favorites to win IPL 2009 after losing in the semifinals in 2008. Even though the captain-coach combination continued in the second season, and there were big names in the squad, such as Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayewardene, Brett Lee, and Irfan Pathan, the team didn’t do as well as expected. They finished fifth on the points table, tied with defending champions Deccan Chargers but with a much lower net run rate.
Downfall for the next four seasons (2010 – 2013)
It was all just a game of musical chairs and snakes & ladders for the PBKS (Full Form: Punjab Kings) team from 2010 onwards. Kumar Sangakkara replaced Yuvraj Singh as captain. Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara made over 800 runs, and Irfan Pathan contributed all around. But Punjab seemed to lose the vital moments, often losing close matches. As a result, they withered and fell to the bottom of the heap, ranking eighth in the points table.
The following year, in 2011, the team got a new coach, Michael Bevan, and a new captain, Adam Gilchrist. They were both in charge of a revamped team. Punjab missed out on a place in the knockout rounds and could only move up three spots to finish the season in fifth place.
2012 Gilchrist became the coach and captain, and the team’s performance slipped a bit. They were sixth in the standings that year. The following year, a new foreign coach, Darren Lehmann, was brought in, but Punjab had a mediocre tournament, with eight wins and eight losses, and their ranking remained unchanged.
PBKS IPL 2014 – Best season to date
After years of struggle, Punjab finally turned things around in 2014 under new coach Sanjay Bangar and captain George Bailey. They topped the league stage with 11 wins. The new captain-coach combination worked wonders for the team, leading them to the playoffs and the finals. Unfortunately, they fell short in the finals against KKR, losing in a thrilling last-over finish.
PBKS IPL’s ups and downs (2015 – 2018)
Punjab had a rough time in the IPL seasons of 2015 and 2016. They won 3 out of 14 matches in 2015 and 4 out of 14 games in 2016. Their poor performance put them at the bottom of the table each time.
Punjab had a better season than their previous two in 2017 when Australian Glenn Maxwell was made captain. They were in contention to qualify for the playoffs, but their hopes were dashed in a game when they were bowled out for 73, their lowest total in the IPL so far. As a result, they finished fifth on the points table.
In 2018, the Punjab squad saw significant changes after the auction, with R Ashwin appointed captain. The new team consisted of big names like KL Rahul, Chris Gayle, Aaron Finch, and Yuvraj Singh. They had a great start to the season, winning 5 out of their first 6 matches. However, they hit a rough patch, winning only 1 out of their next 8 games and finishing 7th on the points table.
Sixth place in four consecutive seasons (2019 – 2022)
Punjab King’s next four seasons (2019 to 2022) were a rollercoaster, with each season characterized by close losses in the first half, followed by several wins in the second half, and vice versa in a late surge for a playoff spot. However, they couldn’t maintain that momentum and took sixth place on the points table all four seasons.
